Cutters deny late Grays rally
August 2, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters' bullpen was put under immediate and constant pressure from the Can-Am Grays upon entering the game, but managed to hold to a slim lead and preserve a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night.
Given a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Cutters starter Tim Keinath was dominant until the seventh inning. He had retired 11 batters in a row until Chris Burke lead off with a single. A momentary loss of control resulted in a walk and a base hit to load the bases with one out. Manager Mike Church summoned Andy Weimer from the bullpen to get out of the jam and Weimer did just that, striking out Jason Startari and getting a ground ball off the bat of Willie King that resulted in a fielder's choice.
The Grays would not relent. In the following inning, Weimer got himself into trouble with a leadoff walk the nine-batter in the Grays lineup, Alex Garcia. A balk would move Garcia to second. Scott Grimes doubled home Garcia and suddenly the Cutters were clinging to a lead by the flimsiest of threads.
In came Mark Comolli to try and save the game for New Haven County in the direst of situations. A ball hit in between shortstop and third base by B.J. Weed looked destined for left field and to tie the score but was kept in the infield by Chas Terni, forcing Grimes to stay at third. With runners on the corners and no outs and the 3-4-5 hitters coming up to the dish, the Grays looked certain to at least tie the game. Somehow, Comolli managed to navigate through the heart of the opposition's order and escaped unscathed, with a little help from an outstanding defensive play from Mike LaRosa up the middle and a Bill Peavey scoop.
The top of the ninth proved to be anticlimactic, as Comolli mowed down three straight Grays to give Keinath his second victory of the year and pick up the save.
Peavey and Terni had the RBIs for the Cutters. It?s Camp Day at Yale Field tomorrow. There is a special 11:05 a.m. start time for the rubber match of this three-game series. Courtney Hall (2-3) pitches for the Cutters. He will face the Grays? Andrew Edwards (1-1).
