Can-Am game recap

NEW JERSEY 6, QUEBEC 1 @ Little Falls, N.J. Time: 2:20 ATT: 1,574 W: Joel Bennett (7-1) L: Julien Tucker (5-3) S: None HR: QUE - Bill Greenwell (4) NJ - Chris Rowan (9) New Jersey P Joel Bennett pitched a gem of a game, and six Jackals had multi-hit games as New Jersey rolled over Quebec 6-1. Bennett almost went the distance, pitching eight innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one run - a DH Bill Greenwell home run - en route to his seventh win of the year, third most in the league and most on his team. Pacing the New Jersey offense was SS Chris Rowan, who hit 2-4 on the night with two runs scored, a solo home run, and two RBI. Simply put, Quebec had no answer for Bennett tonight, as everything they threw at him, or more appropriately, everything he threw at them came up empty. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- WORCESTER 11, NORTH SHORE 7 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 3:13 ATT: 2,035 W: Reid Willett (7-4) L: Ryan McCally (2-2) S: None HR: NS - Travis Oglesby (16) WOR - Omar Pena (12), Andy Brown (15) There was scoring right and left tonight, and when the dust settled and all was said and done, Worcester emerged victorious 11-7 over North Shore in a lights-out display of offensive fireworks on both sides. North Shore got on the board early, giving the fans a glimpse of what was in store with three runs in the first two innings, but from there Worcester just took over, outscoring North Shore 6-2 in the third and fourth, then outscoring them 4-2 in the final three innings of play. The crucial spark for the Tornadoes tonight was SS Omar Pena, who set up both of Worcester four-run innings by hitting a two-run home run in the fourth and a two-RBI double in the seventh. He ended the day with a 2-4 line from the plate with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN 2, GRAYS 1 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:53 ATT: 1,045 W: Tim Keinath (2-5) L: Glen Keeton (0-1) S: Mark Comolli (4) HR: None Small ball works, when your pitching can work with very little run support, as it did tonight for New Haven in the Cutters' 2-1 victory over the Grays. Every starter picked up just one hit for the Cutters, but the paltry offensive numbers allowed the real stars of the game to shine through - the pitchers. New Haven starter Tim Keinath notched six and a third innings of scoreless, three-hit ball for the win, while the tandem of Andy Weimar and Mark Comolli pitched the remainder of the game allowing just two hits, a walk, and the only Grays' run of the game. For the Cutters, the scoring was done early, as they picked up two runs in the third on a SS Chas Terni RBI double and a 1B Bill Peavey RBI single, number 50 on the year for Peavey. After that the bats were all silenced until the eighth, when the Grays finally brought one home on a OF Scott Grimes RBI double, but failed to bring home the game-tying run as Comolli came on and shut down the Grays' offense for good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BROCKTON 14, ELMIRA 2 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 2:45 ATT: 2,869 W: Kevin Beavers (4-3) L: Buddy Bengel (2-4) S: None HR: BRO - Brad Rosenblat (4) There was nothing but good news for Brockton tonight, as the Rox pounced on Elmira early and never looked back, cruising to a 14-2 win that wasn't even as close as the score suggests. The Rox got eight runs in the first, thanks to six hits, and two errors in the Rox' 14 plate appearances that inning - which might set some records if there was ever a stat recording how many times a team bats around in an inning. From there, the Rox continued to pile it on, adding two more in the second after the Pioneers put up their first run of the game, and added four more runs to their already-insurmountable 10-1 lead by the sixth inning. The Rox got effective, if not mercuric pitching from P Kevin Beavers tonight. Beavers went eight full innings, looking red-hot as he struck out eight batters, but also ice cold as he gave up eight hits and walked two, leading to the two Elmira runs in the game.
