Cutters Beat South Division Rival Jackals 4-3 in Series Opener

West Haven, CT- June 14, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters broke a five-game losing streak by winning the opening game of a four-game home stand by defeating the New Jersey Jackals in a come-from-behind ninth inning rally, 4-3.

Team Australian Olympian Gavin Fingleson, in his return from a shoulder injury, drove in the game winning RBI in the ninth inning with an infield single.

Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Cutters were down 3-2 and Adam Shorsher drew a leadoff walk from submarine reliever Carlos Gomez before Joe Calfapietra called on lefty Carlos Figueroa to enter the game. Jose Mateo laid down a text book sacrifice bunt that moved Carlos Dominguez, pinch-runner for Shorsher, into scoring position. Tyrone Pendergrass followed with an RBI single to tie the game. After Pendergrass stole second, PJ Johnston legged out an infield single on a slow bouncer to short. Fingleson followed with the game-winning hit and he went 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored in his return.

The Cutters 2-3-4 hitters combined to go 6-for-11 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Chris Keelin gets the win (1-1) going the final two innings giving up one hit in relief of Ryan Bonesio who went a season-long seven innings.

With the win the Cutters retake first place by a half game over the New Jersey Jackals and move back to .500 on the season (9-9).

Wilton Veras was 2-for-4 with an RBI for New Jersey.

The Jackals break a five-game winning streak in the process and fall to 8-9 on the season.
