Cusick's Home Run, Curran's Triple Pace Jackals To 10-4 Victory Over Newark
July 29, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
It was a tight game until Chris Curran's bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning gave the Jackals a comfortable 9-4 lead. A scoreless performance by the Jackals bullpen helped New Jersey to a 10-4 win over the Newark Bears on a cloudy Sunday afternoon in Newark.
In two-hours and forty-six minutes, the Jackals took the series two to one after their five-game winning streak was snapped yesterday.
With Newark runners on second and third with no one out in a 6-4 game in the seventh inning, Jeff Gogal induced two ground outs and a line drive to precede Curran's nail-in-the-coffin triple an inning later.
Kyle Greenwalt gets the win. He throws six innings and allows four runs, two earned, off four base hits. He moves to 5-2 this season.
Bears' starter Matt Fitton gets the loss in a five-inning effort. He allows four runs, two earned, off four hits, two walks, and a strikeout. His record now stands at 3-4.
Down 3-1 in the third, Matt Cusick cut a game-tying home run through the wind to right field. Both teams would trade runs before two sacrifice flies in the Jackals half of the seventh inning put New Jersey up two.
In the eighth, Nick Giarraputo was hit by a pitch, Matt Nandin walked, and Angel Berroa was hit by a pitch to send up Curran with two outs. His first triple of the season found the first base-first baseman gap to put New Jersey up 9-4. Berroa would add an RBI single in the ninth to finish the scoring.
With the win, New Jersey improves to 39-28, five-and-a-half games back of first-place Quebec.
Newark drops to 20-47.
Tomorrow, the Jackals start a four-game series with the Tornadoes up in Worcester. Craig Clark (4-5, 6.23 ERA) goes for the Jackals. First pitch is 7:05. The pregame show starts 10 minutes prior.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
