Current And Former Ports Headed To MLB Futures Game

STOCKTON, Calif. - Major League Baseball has announced the roster for the 2008 XM-All-Star Futures Game which will take place as a part of the MLB All-Star festivities at Yankee Stadium in New York. Ports starting pitcher Henry Rodriguez along with former Ports Cliff Pennington (IF), Trevor Cahill (RHP), and Brett Anderson (LHP) will make their way to New York to represent the Oakland A's in the prestigious showcase that features baseball's top minor league prospects. The game will be held on Sunday July 13, and features the U.S. prospects taking on the World prospects.

Henry Rodriguez will play for the World Team in the game as he is a native of Zulia, Venezuela. Rodriguez started the season with Stockton and after three starts was quickly promoted to Double-A Midland. Before his promotion, Rodriguez had a record of 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA. Rodriguez has since rejoined the Ports and has a record of 1-1 with a 4.43 ERA in four starts in June. While Rodriguez was in Midland he struck out 36 batters in 33.2 innings. With the Ports he has struck out 52 batters in 37.1 innings. Rodriguez's best start of the season came on April 9, against the Bakersfield Blaze, he went six scoreless innings on just two hits while striking out eight, and walking two. Rodriguez was signed by the Oakland A's as a non-drafted free agent in 2003 and is a member of the A's 40-man roster.

Trevor Cahill started the season with the Ports and made 13 starts and 14 appearances but has since been promoted to Double-A Midland. With Stockton, Cahill went 5-4 with a 2.78 ERA. He recorded 103 strikeouts in 87.1 innings before moving up to Midland. In Double-A, Cahill has made one start and picked up the win on June 20. He went six innings allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out six and walking three. Cahill has recorded a season high 12 strike outs twice this year both with the Ports, the first time against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and the second time against the Bakersfield Blaze. Cahill was drafted in the supplemental round of the 2006 draft by the Oakland A's out of Vista High School in Oceanside, CA.

Brett Anderson, like Cahill, started the season with Stockton and has been promoted to Double-A Midland. With the Ports Anderson went 9-4 with a 4.14 ERA. He won his last four starts with the Ports and struck out 80 batters in 74 innings. Anderson's best start for the Ports came on May 1, against the Visalia Oaks. He went seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out and not walking a batter. Anderson has made one start with Midland and continued where he left off with Stockton. In his Double-A debut, Anderson went six innings, allowing just two runs on two hits, while striking out 12 and not walking a batter. Anderson was acquired by the A's in an off-season trade that sent Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cliff Pennington spent parts of the 2006 and 2007 season with the Ports. He started the 2008 season in Midland and is now currently with Triple-A Sacramento. With the Ports, Pennington hit .209 in 2006 and .255 during the 2007 season before getting a mid-season promotion to Double-A. Pennington hit .260 in 50 games for Midland with 18 RBI and 20 stolen bases and is currently hitting .290 in 26 games with Triple-A Sacramento. Pennington was the A's first-round pick in 2005 out of Texas A&M.

This season, players on the U.S. team's roster were chosen as part of the 2008 Team USA Olympic trial team. In years past, the game has been played in a seven-inning format. This year, the showcase will be a regulation nine-inning game.
