Quakes Fall To Mavs 6-4 in 10 Innings

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes won on late inning heroics in the first two games of the series against the High Desert Mavericks, but the Mavericks were the team with the late inning magic on Saturday as they defeated the Quakes 6-4 in ten innings at the Epicenter.

After struggling to get base runners on in the first two innings against High Desert starter Donny Hume, the Quakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run single by Abel Nieves, which scored Anthony Norman and Peter Bourjos.

In the top of the fourth inning the Mavericks got one run back on back-to-back doubles by Jamie McOwen and Travis Scott off of Quakes starter Sean O'Sullivan which narrowed the Quakes lead to 2-1. O'Sullivan who had won four of his last five starts had a strong outing going seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits but got the no-decision.

For the second game in a row Mark Trumbo homered, this time a two-run home run to center field in the fifth inning, his 19th of the season which pushed the Quakes lead to 4-1.

Taking advantage of two Quakes errors in the top of the sixth, High Desert scored twice narrowing Rancho's lead to 4-3. With two outs Travis Scott lined a single to center field scoring Carlos Peguero from third, Peter Bourjos then misplayed the ball allowing Chris Minaker to come around and score.

Chris Bootcheck came in relief of O'Sullivan in the top of the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless inning and it looked as if the Quakes were going to pull out their third win in a row. But in the ninth, High Desert loaded the bases with two outs against Brian Chambers then pinch runner Ogui Diaz scored the tying run on a passed ball by catcher Flint Wipke which made it 4-4.

In the top of the tenth inning after back-to-back singles off of Chambers (0-2), Jamie McOwen lined a double into the left-center field gap scoring Carlos Peguero and Chris Minaker, the eventual game winning runs. McOwen and Scott did most of the damage for the Mavericks on Saturday night against the Quakes pitching as McOwen went 2-for-5 with two RBI's and Scott was 3-for-4 with two RBI's as well.

Michael Anton (0-1, 6.30 ERA), in search of his first Quakes victory on the season gets the start for Rancho against High Desert's Ricky Orta (3-1, 4.32 ERA) on Sunday at 2:05.
