Cumming shuts down Flyboys, Sock Puppets sweep series

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Tossing a complete game shutout, Dylan Cumming (Liberty) held the Greeneville Flyboys to one hit on Sunday, July 10 as the Burlington Sock Puppets knocked off Greeneville 6-0 in seven innings.

Ryan McCrystal (ECU) got the scoring started for the Sock Puppets (25-8) in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Kole Meyers (Troy) to give Burlington a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Jack O'Reilly (Villanova) recorded the only hit of the evening for the Flyboys (16-17), an infield single, but Greeneville could not score.

In the bottom of the second frame, Carlos Peña (Missouri) snuck a ball just to the left of the right field foul pole, giving him his second home run of the season and swelling the Burlington lead to 3-0.

Peña came around to score again in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring off an RBI single by Meyers to make it a 4-0 game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Peña once again came up big for the Sock Puppets, as his two-RBI single finished off the Flyboys, giving Burlington the 6-0 win.

Cumming (4-3) went the full seven innings, allowing just one hit, walking one batter, and striking out seven.

Roan Tarbert (East Georgia State) was handed the loss, going four innings, allowing four runs off six hits, walking three and striking out three. Caleb Jones (Winthrop) went two innings, allowing two runs off four hits and striking out a pair of Puppets.

The Flyboys will return home to Pioneer Park to open a two-game set against the Elizabethton River Riders beginning on Monday, July 11. It's First Responder Night, with all first responders earning free admission to the game. It is also Dollar Monday, with one-dollar hot dogs, chips, and cookies. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM, with fans able to purchase tickets online at flyboysbaseball.com.
