Iowa Cubs News Release

The Iowa Cubs (42-39) won the rubber game of their three-game set with the Oklahoma City RedHawks (39-41) by a 7-1 score Friday night at Principal Park in front of 12,419 fans. The Cubs scored three seventh- inning runs to break open a 3-1 game, helping Casey Fossum (1-0) earn the win in his first appearance as an Iowa Cub.

The holiday weekend crowd stuck around through an hour-long delay at the beginning of the night to watch an I-Cubs victory. Every Iowa starter had at least one hit as the Cubs pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of three ‘Hawks errors.

Chicago Cubs rehabbing reliever Angel Guzman got the start for Iowa and threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Guzman allowed one hit and one walk before handing the ball over to Fossum with one out in the second inning. The right-hander threw 15 of his 25 pitches for strikes.

Fossum worked 4.2 effective innings in relief, allowing just one run on four hits. The veteran left-hander walked two and struck out five. Following tonight's outing in relief, Fossum is expected to join the Iowa rotation and start Thursday's game at Oklahoma City.

Nate Spears led the Cubs at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Luis Rivas was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, on the Oklahoma City roster on a rehab assignment, was 0-for-5 Friday with a strikeout. In three games against Iowa pitching this week, Hamilton hit just .063 (1- for-16) with a single and four strikeouts.

Following Friday's win, the Cubs embark on a nine-game road trip starting in New Orleans tomorrow with a 6:00 p.m. contest against the Zephyrs. The I-Cubs return home for an eight-game homestand July 16-23.

Notes: The Cubs improved their record to 27-9 this season when connecting for 10 or more hits ... In six games against the RedHawks this season, the Iowa bullpen owns a miniscule 0.85 ERA (3ER, 31.2IP).
