Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Iowa Cubs defeated the Nashville Sounds, 9-3, on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. The loss was the Sounds' season-high fourth in a row and dropped the club to third in the PCL East standings.
Former big-leaguer Juan Cruz (2-0) picked up the victory for Iowa, tossing five innings while giving up only two earned runs and striking out five.
The Cubs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to centerfielder Nic Jackson. Jackson hit a two-run homer off of Sounds starter Dave Williams that just barely eluded the glove of leaping Sounds left-fielder John Barnes. Iowa would add three unearned runs in the third as a result of a fielding error by Nashville third baseman Rob Mackowiak.
Iowa led 6-0 before the Sounds bats came to life in the fourth inning. Nashville's first run came via a Tomas de la Rosa sacrifice fly that scored Mackowiak and they added their second score one inning later when Tike Redman, who stole his PCL-leading 26th base in the frame, came home on a Barnes sac fly.
The Sounds would cut the Iowa lead to 6-3 in the seventh when catcher Brad King hit his first home run of the season, a pinch-hit shot off of rehabbing reliever Dave Veres. It was the first pinch-hit homer by a Nashville batter since Chris Pritchett blasted one last July 7 against Iowa.
Iowa first baseman Phil Hiatt sealed the Sounds' fate with a three-run blast off of reliever Mike Holtz in the top of the eighth to cap the scoring at 9-3. Hiatt finished 2-for-3 in the contest for Iowa, which also receive a 2-for-5, three-RBI night from Jackson.
Williams (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits over a three-inning stint. Mackowiak went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Sounds. Relief pitchers Shawn Camp, Duaner Sanchez, and Mike Lincoln pitched a combined four shutout innings, giving up only one hit total in relief of Williams before Holtz was summoned in the eighth.
The Sounds and Cubs will meet in game two of the four-game series tomorrow afternoon in a noon matinee at Greer Stadium. It will be a battle of the Matts, as Iowa's Matt Bruback (4-6, 4.31) will face the Sounds' Matt Guerrier (1-5, 4.75).
