MELBOURNE - For the third straight game the Daytona Cubs scored in the first inning and for the third straight game the Cubs won as they took down the Brevard County Manatees (11-6), 4-2. Cubs starter Ryan Searle (2-0) spun a beautiful game for the Cubs and picked up the win as he worked five innings and gave up no runs and just two hits. The Manatees starter Lucas Luetge (1-1) took the loss for Brevard County.

Daytona put up two runs in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Nathan Samson reached on a walk. Marwin Gonzalez then looked to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Manatees catcher Martin Maldonado tried to cut down Samson at second. The speedy second baseman beat the throw and the Cubs had runners at first and second with no one out. After a walk to Marquez Smith, third baseman Jovan Rosa brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Gonzalez moved to third on the fly ball from Rosa and touched home after a fast ball from Luetge got away from Maldonado.

The Cubs got two more runs in the top of the second as Daytona started the inning off with five straight hits. All of them were singles. Left fielder Drew Rundle and Nathan Samson each picked up a RBI to go along with their base hit.

Catcher Robinson Chirinos led Cubs hitters with a three-hit night performance that left him a home run shy of the cycle. He also scored a run in the second. Nathan Samson also played well, as he went two-for-three with a run scored and one driven in.

The Manatees scratched their way back into the ballgame, as Al Alburquerque allowed a run to score in the sixth. After hitting Brett Whiteside to lead off the inning, the Cubs righty walked Logan Schafer and gave up a single to Eric Farris to load the bases, Caleb Gindl, fresh of his Player of the Week award, hit a sacrifice fly to center to put Brevard County on the board. Luke Sommer entered the game in the eight and saw Schafer start the inning with a double down the line in left and score on an error by Samson at second. David Cales worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and earn his second save of the season.

The Cubs return to "The Jack" Tuesday morning for Education Day presented by McDonald's. First pitch is at 10:35 a.m. with gates opening at 9 a.m. The probable starters are Craig Muschko and Evan Anundsen for the Cubs and Manatees, respectively.
