Boise Hawks News Release

Nothing is predictable on Draft day, and the Chicago Cubs threw the fans a curveball with the selection of South Arkansas University pitcher Hayden Simpson. Simpson, who was a runner-up for the Division II Player of the Year Award, went 13-1 at Southern Arkansas with a 1.81 ERA and struck out 131 batters. Scouts have been impressed with his fastball and his ability to maintain his velocity, which is why the Cubs selected him with the 16th overall pick.

Simpson filled up the record books when he was at Southern Arkansas. He won the 2010 Daktronics National Pitcher of the Year, named the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Year, and was a unanimous First-Team Gulf South Conference Selection. In three years at Southern Arkansas, he went 35-2 with 323 strikeouts, which is a school record.

Simpson is just one of many players the Cubs will be drafting in the next few days. To see what other curveballs the Cubs have in store, tune in tomorrow at 10am. Rounds 2-30 will be hosted on MLB.com/Live and you can also follow the action on Twitter.
