
Padres Select 29 Players on Second Day of 2010 First-Year Player Draft

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego Padres today selected 29 players on the second day of Major League Baseball's 2010 First-Year Player Draft. The 50-round draft concludes tomorrow with the final 20 rounds starting at 9:00 a.m. PT.
In the second round, with the 59th overall pick, the Padres selected infielder Jedd Gyorko out of West Virginia University. The 22-year-old hit .381 (90-for-236) with 28 doubles, one triple, 19 home runs, 57 RBI and 71 runs scored in 57 games for the Mountaineers this season. The right-handed hitter also boasted a .472 on-base percentage with 43 walks against 24 strikeouts along with a .750 slugging percentage. The West Virginia-native is the all-time leader at WVU with a .404 batting average, 73 doubles, 113 extra-base hits and is tied for first-place with 53 home runs over 168 games throughout his collegiate career.
In the third round, with the 91st overall pick, the Padres selected right-handed pitcher Zach Cates out of Northeast Texas Community College. The 20-year-old went 7-2 with a 2.54 ERA (19 ER/67.1 IP) with 91 strikeouts against 32 walks and 45 hits allowed over 13 games for the Eagles this season. Last year Cates spent most of the season as a catcher, hitting .290 (38-for-131) over 44 games while working three games as a pitcher and tossing 7.0 innings. Over his high school career he went 18-4 with a 2.50 ERA over 95.0 innings pitched, while hitting .452 with 20 home runs and 108 runs scored at the plate.
After the second day of drafting, the Padres have selected a total of 30 players, including 19 position players and 11 pitchers. San Diego has drafted 21 college players and nine high school players. The draft will resume tomorrow with rounds 31-50 beginning at 9:00 a.m. PT.
