
Cubs Right Hander Guzman to Rehab in Peoria

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that Cubs RHP Angel Guzman will begin a rehab stint in Peoria on Sunday when the Chiefs take on Cedar Rapids at O'Brien Field at 2:00 PM. Guzman is expected to start on Sunday and pitch three innings.
Guzman, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, has had two separate disabled list stints this season, began the year on the Cubs opening day roster. He has also spent time at AAA Iowa and a rehab stint with the AZL Cubs in Mesa. With Chicago, Guzman posted a 0-1 record with a 3.56 ERA in 12 appearances, three of which were starts. He struck out 26 batters and walked just nine in 30 1/3 innings pitched with the Cubs. Guzman was with Iowa at the end of April and into early May. He went 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA in three starts in the PCL. During his rehab time in Mesa, he went 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA in three starts that all were one inning each. In his last AZL appearance on August 28th, he started and pitched one inning against the AZL Padres. He did not allow a hit or a base runner in his final outing in Mesa.
Guzman made his Major League debut in 2006 with the Cubs after starting the season in Iowa. He was signed as a free agent in November of 1999 and was a non-roster invitee to Big League camp in 2003. The right-hander did not have success as a starter in Chicago but was lights out coming out of the bullpen. As a starter he was 0-6 with a 9.28 ERA in 10 starts but as a reliever he was 0-0 with a 1.35 ERA and allowed just two earned runs in 13.1 innings pitched. In 496 2/3 innings in the Majors, he has limited hitters to a .241 average.
He made two rehab appearances with the Chiefs during the '05 season in which he was 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in his two starts in Peoria. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk in 6 1/3 innings. Guzman has pitched in the Midwest League before when Lansing was a Cubs affiliate in 2002. With the Lugnuts he was 5-2 with a 1.89 ERA in nine starts while striking out 49 batters in 62 innings.
Guzman joins pitcher Kerry Wood, catcher Henry Blanco and pitcher Wade Miller on the list of the Cubs players who have rehabbed with Peoria this season. Sunday is the final WHOI Kids Count day. All kids 14 and under can run the bases after the game as well as get Chiefs players autographs on the concourse. Gates open for Sunday's game at 1:00 PM with the first pitch at 2:00.
