Hernandez, Gonzalez Flip-flop On Dl
August 30, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities pitching staff got good news and bad news on Thursday afternoon, as RHP Marco Gonzalez was activated from the Disabled List while RHP Elvis Hernandez was placed on the Disabled List.
Gonzalez, a 23-year-old reliever from Los Angeles, California, had emerged as a valuable setup man in the Swing bullpen before a cut on his left hand forced him to the DL on July 25. Prior to the injury, he was 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA and just two runs allowed over 12 appearances and 15.2 innings pitched. The right-hander will play with a splint on his non-throwing hand that fits underneath his glove.
While the bullpen will get a boost from Gonzalez' return, the starting rotation was dealt a blow on the same day with the loss of Hernandez.
The 22-year-old Dominican left his start early on Thursday night, allowing one hit over 3.1 scoreless innings in Burlington before a right shoulder strain forced him to exit in the middle of a fourth-inning at-bat. He is 6-9 with a 4.09 ERA this season, having racked up 111 strikeouts in 110 innings over 29 outings (21 starts).
The pitching staff shakeup comes as the Swing sit on the verge of a playoff berth, with a chance to punch their ticket to the post-season with a win on Thursday night at John O'Donnell Stadium against Ryne Sandberg's Peoria Chiefs.
The current Swing of the Quad Cities roster stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
