Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars made a great effort Thursday night to stay in the second-half playoff race, as they swept a doubleheader against the Beloit Snappers in front of 8,454 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Jason Fernandez pitched a complete game for a 6-3 Game 1 win, and Trevor Cahill and Sam Demel stymied Beloit in Game 2 with a 4-1 finish. The Cougars enter play Friday no worse than 1.5 games out in the wild card race with five remaining.

Fernandez (8-2) gave up three runs -- all in the fourth -- over seven innings in Game 1 to pick up his eighth victory of the year. The first run in the fourth ended his consecutive scoreless innings streak at 17 2/3. The Cougars had given him a 3-0 lead with a big first inning against Henry Reyes (0-1), as Greg Dowling drove in a run, another scored on an error and Todd Johnson singled home one. Then Larry Cobb belted a run-scoring double in the second to make it 4-0. Cobb also tripled in a run in the fourth and scored.

Cahill (11-4) won his fourth straight start with a solid Game 2 performance. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up one run, walked none and struck out nine. He's had 11 quality starts in his last 14 and given up one run or no runs in nine straight outings. Again the Cougars scored in the first inning, this time against Brian Kirwan (2-8) on an Alex Valdez single. Cobb plated two in the fourth with a two-out single, and Mike Massaro's ensuing hit made it 4-0. The Snappers' only run came in the fifth. Demel recorded the final two outs in the seventh for his fourth save.

The Cougars (36-29), who are a season-best seven games above .500, play their final regular-season home game Friday night at 6:30 CT. Scott Deal (6-10) will face Alex Burnett (9-7) of Beloit (31-34).
