South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: At the time, it looked like a meaningless insurance run. But at game's end Miguel Amaya's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring Brandon Hughes turned out to be the series deciding run in the rubber game between the South Bend Cubs and Great Lakes Loons.
The Cubs received yet another quality start from right hander Erling Moreno on Monday. The second year South Bend Cub dazzled in six shutout innings while earning his second win of the season. Despite four walks, Moreno worked out of all jams, including a bases loaded jam in the 2nd inning. He finished that frame with a strikeout of Jacob Amaya.
South Bend did their damage in the 3rd and 4th innings. With three runs in the 3rd, a serious blow was dealt to Great Lakes, who was never able to fully recover. Hughes, Amaya, and Austin Filiere came home to score to give the Cubs the three run advantage.
Then, in the 4th, South Bend got that extra insurance run to make it a four run game. In the end, they needed it.
After Ben Hecht worked a shutout 1-2-3 7th inning, he returned for the mound in the 8th. Hecht loaded the bases full of Loons and exited the game with one out. Great Lakes scored three times to make it just a one run ball game. With a man on second now, it was Brian Glowicki's turn.
Glowicki earned the five out save and shut down the Loons for the next 1.2 innings. With a miraculous catch by Hughes in center field in the 9th, Glowicki hung a zero and picked up save number 17.
With the win, the Cubs win the series two games out of three and are now just 2.5 games back of the wild card. Currently, the Loons are still in the wild card spot, but South Bend has three games remaining against Great Lakes all on the road to make that up.
Tomorrow, the Cubs will head to Eastlake, Ohio to face division rival Lake County for three games. First pitch from Classic Park is set for 7:00 PM.
