Iowa Cubs News Release

Mike McCoy's two-out single in the top of the 12th inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Iowa Cubs 3-2 at Principal Park Wednesday night.

Christopher Frey opened the 12th inning with a lead-off single off reliever Hector Carrasco and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Baker. McCoy broke the tie, driving in Frey, when he laced a single to right field to give Colorado the lead.

Both teams traded leads throughout the night but it was Colorado Springs who took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Miller opened the frame with a lead off single off I-Cubs starter Mike Burns. Miller came around to score two batters later when Frey connected on a line drive double to center field.

Iowa struck in the third inning with a single by catcher Tony Richie. Richie advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Burns and scored on a wild pitch by Sky Sox starter Franklin Morales. Richie finished the night 2-for-3 with a run.

After a scoreless fourth, Colorado reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning by taking advantage of an I-Cubs error as McCoy reached first on a miscue by first baseman Matt Craig. Christian Colonel gave Colorado a 2-1 lead with an RBI single up the middle. Iowa avoided further damage in the fifth when Colonel tried scoring on a line drive single by Joe Koshansky, but was thrown out on an inning-ending collision at home plate with Richie, who held onto the ball.

The 2-1 lead lasted until the sixth inning. Andres Torres started off the sixth with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Felix Pie. Morales almost worked out of the inning, but his delivery was too much to handle for catcher Adam Melhuse and Torres scored on the wild pitch to even the game at two.

Morales worked out of another jam in the seventh as the I-Cubs threatened with singles by Scales and Figueroa. A walk by Micah Hoffpauir loaded the bases but Morales got Torres to fly out to center to end the threat.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Burns tossed six strong innings. He scattered two hits, while allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out five. Morales went seven innings, giving up just two runs, also just one earned, on five hits while striking eight.

Jose Ascanio threw two scoreless innings of relief. Michael Wuertz pitched a perfect eighth, ninth, 10th innings by striking out seven out of the nine batters he faced.

Both teams remained deadlocked at two until the 12th when McCoy gave the Sky Sox a 3-2 lead. They tacked on two more runs on an RBI bunt single by Doug Bernier and an RBI double by Colonel to make it the final 5-2.

Carrasco (5-3) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in just an inning of work.

Colorado reliever Ryan Speier picked up the win (1-0) with a scoreless 12th inning of relief.
