
Niese, Hernandez Star In Zephyr Win

New Orleans, LA - Jonathon Niese allowed just a run on three hits in his Triple-A debut and Anderson Hernandez went 3 for 4 with two RBI as the New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Sidewinders 7-1 on Wednesday night.
Niese (1-0) did not allow a run until the fourth when Tim Raines, Jr. homered to left leading off. Josh Whitesell followed with a double but Niese buckled down and retired the next 11 hitters he faced and 12 of his final 13. He finished with seven strikeouts and just two walks.
The Zephyrs got single runs in the second and third innings and took a 2-1 lead to the sixth where they began to pull away against Dustin Glant. Hernandez lined a two run triple to right to pad New Orleans' lead to 4-1. In the seventh, Valentino Pascucci picked up a RBI single and Raul Casanova added a two run double.
Glant allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in his two innings of work.
A.J. Shappi started and pitched well for the Sidewinders but suffered the loss. Shappi (1-4) allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings on seven hits. He had a strikeout and did not walk anyone.
The Sidewinders and Zephyrs play game two of their series on Thursday night at Zephyr Field. Right-hander Max Scherzer (0-0, 3.34) starts for Tucson against right-hander Ruddy Lugo (7-9, 5.01) for New Orleans. First pitch is at 5:00 Tucson time. The game will air LIVE on COOL 1450 beginning at 4:50.
