Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - A ninth inning Memphis rally came up a run short in Iowa's 4-3 win Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning the Redbirds scored twice before Cubs closer Jose Ascanio finally closed the door. Cody Haerther's run-scoring single scored D'Angelo Jimenez from first base after left fielder Matt Murton bobbled the ball. With two outs Nick Stavinoha brought the 'Birds within a run driving in Haerther. Ascanio rebounded to strike out Brian Barden and pick up his 11th save of the season.

Iowa did a majority of their damage with a three-run third inning. Eric Patterson came through with the big hit driving in two runs with a single. Patterson later scored on a wild pitch from Memphis starter Anthony Reyes to cap the rally. The Cubs second baseman finished the night 3-for-5 to lead the team.

Cubs starter Randy Wells earned the win with six solid innings. The big right-hander gave up one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Reyes took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts over seven innings.

The Redbirds will send Mike Parisi to the hill tomorrow for the first time since the right-hander was optioned from St. Louis June 6. Iowa will counter with left-hander Rich Hill. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
