Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - Billy Buckner's pitching and Trot Nixon's hitting gave the Sidwinders a 6-1 win on Tuesday night against division foe, the Sacramento River Cats.

Tucson's starter Billy Buckner did not give up a run in eight innings of work, striking out three batters, walking two, and only giving up six hits.

Trot Nixon hit two home runs in the game, which were his eighth and ninth of the season. The last Sidewinder to hit two home runs in a game was Josh Whitesell on 5/28/08 versus Sacramento.

A leadoff, broken bat, double by Jamie D'Antona in the second inning got things started for the Sidewinders. Donnie Kelly drove him in later with an RBI single to left. Jesus Merchan hit his first home run of the season to left in the second, which gave the Sidewinders an early 3-0 lead.

Nixon hit his first home run in the third inning, a two run shot that brought in Tim Raines, Jr. His second home came in the fifth, which was a solo shot to right field giving Tucson a 6-0 lead.

Reliever Leo Rosales replaced Buckner in the ninth and gave up one run off a Joe Gaetti RBI single that scored Richie Robnet from second, but was able to get out of the inning and give the Sidewinders their second straight victory.

The Sidewinders will face Sacramento in the third game of the series at 7:00 PM on Wednesday. RHP Esmerling Vasquez (1-1, 6.31) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander Dan Meyer (5-3, 4.64) will start for the River Cats. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
