Matt Camp delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Iowa Cubs (49-45) held on to edge the Nashville Sounds (52-42) by a 5-4 score on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park. With the win, the Cubs secured a three-games-to-one series victory over the first place Sounds and trimmed Nashville's lead in the PCL American North to three games.
Camp's single off Nashville reliever Ryan Houston (5-2) scored Bobby Scales from second base. Scales, who led off the inning with a walk and had moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Rivas, pumped his fist as he slid across the plate with the go-ahead run.
Blake Parker, pitching for the second consecutive game, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 11th save. Parker also worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn a win in Saturday's 2-1 walkoff victory over the Sounds.
Iowa's Greg Reinhard (2-3) was credited with the win.
A bases-loaded single by Darwin Barney in the sixth inning temporarily gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Barney's single plated Jason Dubois from third base, but Scales was thrown out trying to score on an errant throw from the outfield.
The single by Barney put Iowa starter Mitch Atkins in line for a victory, but the Sounds tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth when Adam Heether delivered an RBI single.
Although he did not figure in the decision, Atkins delivered a quality outing. The right-hander threw allowed just three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Atkins walked just one Sounds hitter and struck out five.
Luis Rivas staked the Cubs to a 3-0 lead with a three-run triple in the first inning. On an 0-2 pitch, Rivas connected on a shot into the right-center field gap that was just beyond the grasp of a diving Jason Bourgeois. The triple was Rivas' first of the year.
Nashville scored single runs in the second and third innings to trim the Iowa advantage to 3-2. Brendan Katin's 20th home run of the season in the sixth capped the Nashville comeback and tied the game 3-3.
The Cubs begin a four-game series with the Omaha Royals (37-55) tomorrow at Principal Park. Left-hander J.R. Mathes (8-4, 3.62) will start for Iowa opposite fellow southpaw Stephen Randolph (4-3, 6.15), who will take the ball for the O-Royals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
