Lake County Captains News Release
(SOUTH BEND, IN) - The Lake County Captains (48-42) matched the South Bend Cubs (52-39) in hits with 10, but the Cubs had three two-run home runs to best the Captains 8-4 on a partly cloudy Tuesday evening at Four Winds Field.
Lake County picked up where they left off in Lansing, as they scored three runs in the top of the first. Alexfri Planez belted his thirteenth homer of the season, a two-run shot to the seats in left, and Gabriel Rodriguez would later single in, Petey Halpin to make it 3-0.
Jack Leftwich earned the start for the Captains and tossed a scoreless first. He'd take the first two outs in the second inning but after a miscommunication on a flyball to left field, a runner reached. That allowed BJ Murray to step up and he smoked a ball over the right field fence to pull South Bend within one.
Leftwich wouldn't be deterred and struck out four batters over the next two innings. Though the Cubs took the lead in the fifth, after a leadoff single from Murray, Luis Verdugo powered a ball over the left field fence, ending the right-hander's day and giving South Bend a 4-3 advantage.
After grounding into two double plays and a pickoff in the next three innings, the Captains knotted up the game in the sixth. Johnathan Rodriguez doubled, and Gabriel Rodriguez walked to put runners on the corners. Aaron Bracho then lined a single, his seventh run batted in, in four games.
The Cubs responded to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After getting two quick outs, Matt Turner permitted a walk and single, which then brought up BJ Murray. Murray singled to left field to plate both runners, he finished with four runs batted in.
Lake County would have the go-ahead runner at the plate in the eighth. Alexfri Planez and Joe Naranjo both walked to begin the frame, but then the Captains were set down in a row all on strikeouts.
South Bend added insurance on a two-run dinger from Jake Washer. Lake County did not have a batter reach in the ninth.
Game two between the Captains and Cubs will be tomorrow Wednesday, July 27. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
