Daytona Tortugas News Release
TAMPA - Following a split of Monday night's doubleheader, the Daytona Cubs (22-29, 56-62) and Tampa Yankees (36-14, 66-51) halved the two games on Tuesday evening at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Daytona held on for the game one win, 5-4, but Tampa walked-off with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
Daytona sent nine batters to the plate in the opening frame and scored four runs off of Yankees starter David Phelps (2-1). Second baseman Nathan Samson reached on an error before the Cubs strung together five straight hits with two outs. Left fielder Jonathan Wyatt had a two-RBI single during the streak and catcher Luis Flores brought in two with a double down the right field line.
The Yankees answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off Cubs starter Rafael Dolis (2-8). Catcher Austin Romine brought in David Adams with a line drive into right field. Romine then scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Kevin Smith.
Daytona and Tampa exchanged runs in the third inning. Shorstop Marwin Gonzalez brought in Wyatt with a ground out for the Cubs run. Yankees designated hitter Brandon Laird also plated Damon Sublett with a ground out. Laird leads the Florida State League with 67 RBI.
Tampa made it a 5-4 game with another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lead-off hitter Daniel Brewer walked and worked his way around the bags thanks to some Cubs' miscues. A wild pitch by Chris Siegfried (2-0) moved Brewer to second and a throwing error by Marwin Gonzalez at shortstop brought him in.
David Cales worked a perfect seventh to notch his thirteenth save of the season.
Game number two featured less offense as neither team scored through the first six innings. Oswaldo Martinez and Mike Perconte combined for the six scoreless frames for Daytona, while Noel Castillo and Phil Bartleski spun six scoreless innings for the Yankees.
Daytona could not get on the board in the top of the seventh, but Tampa would finally find the offense they needed. Center fielder Damon Sublett drew a leadoff walk from Perconte and then stole second base to get in scoring position for Brandon Laird. The FSL RBI leader came through once again with a single to left-center field as the Yankees walked off with the 1-0 victory.
Perconte (1-3) gave up just the one hit to Laird and took the loss. Jonathan Ortiz (1-3) pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up the win for Tampa.
The final game of the five-game set between Daytona and Tampa is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night. It will be the final meeting of the season, with the righty Craig Muscho slated to start. The last time Muschko pitched, the Cubs threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Dunedin on August 15. Be sure to hear all the action on AM1340 WROD and online at www.daytonacubs.com.
