Brockton Rox News Release
Augusta, N.J. - Brockton 3B Phillip Cuadrado smacked a two-run homer and collected three RBI as the Rox defeated the Sussex Skyhawks, 6-4, on Monday evening at Skylands Park.
The Rox (5-6) scored first with a two-out RBI single by 1B Melvin Falu in the first inning. They would double their lead in the third as 2B Scott Wearne scored on an error by Sussex SS Chase Fontaine.
Sussex (6-5) tied the game up in the bottom of the third against Rox starting RHP Wayne Lundgren. The Skyhawks plated two runs on three hits including a sacrifice fly by DH Caleb Stewart and an RBI double by 1B Kris Sanchez.
The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Stewart came through with a two-out run-scoring double that plated LF Kraig Binick. Binick had led off the inning with an infield single and then proceeded to steal his tenth base of the season in as many tries.
In the top of the eighth, Brockton would re-assume control against Sussex LHP Jared Locke. RF Keith Brachold walked to begin the frame and would score on Cuadrado's home run; his first of the season. The Rox led 4-3.
Sussex battled back in the bottom of the inning and tied it with another two-out run. RHP Colin Lynch retired the first two in order, but then RF Kade Keowen doubled and C Ryan Boelsen singled him home. The game was knotted up at 4-4 moving to the ninth inning.
The Rox proceeded to load the bases up with one out for Brachold. Brachold would deliver a tough at-bat and send a sacrifice fly to left field to put Brockton back out on top. Brachold now has 14 RBI on the season, second-most in the league. The Rox added another when Cuadrado was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
With the 6-4 advantage in the bottom of the ninth, RHP Josh Papelbon came on to shut the door on the Skyhawks. Binick led off with a single, but Fontaine would line out and then Papelbon forced back-to-back fielder's choices to end the game. Papelbon picked up his second save in three chances.
Lynch (1-1) gets the victory after pitching the eighth and allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout. RHP Jared Yecker (0-1), who pitched the ninth for Sussex, was issued the loss after giving up two runs with one hit and three walks.
Lundgren did not factor into the decision for the Rox after pitching seven full innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Sussex starting RHP Jusef Frias threw six full innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Brockton is now 4-4 on their nine-game road trip which wraps on Tuesday evening with a 7:05 contest with the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park. It will be RHP Mike Smith (1-1, 2.19 ERA) on the rubber for the Rox. He will be opposed by Sussex RHP Mike McGuire (2-0, 1.50). The Rox will have a day off on Wednesday and then will play at home against Worcester in a 7:05 game on Thursday night.
