Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Memorial Stadium - Boise, Idaho) - In a game that had six led changes and plenty of opportunity for both teams on Monday night, the Boise Hawks took advantage of som shoddy defense from the Canadians late to snap a 9-9 tie and walk out from Memorial Stadium with an 11-9 victory over Vancouver to open up a four game series in Idaho.
Boise hit four home runs in the opener with 3B Aaron Schunk going 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs while DH Mike Toglia and C Bryant Quijada also added solo long balls for the home team. The Hawks plated runs in each of its first six innings as RHP Gabriel Ponce allowed a season-high nine hits and six earned runs before giving way to LHP Nicolas Medina who allowed three runs, one earned over his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Despite Boise's offensive prowess, Vancouver stayed with them and actually took an 8-6 lead on the Hawks in the top of the 6th inning when SS Luis De Los Santos smacked a two-run double off RHP Joel Condreay that scored both RF Will Robertson (single) and 3B Ronny Brito (fielder's choice).
After Boise scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to regain the lead, Vancouver would get an RBI single from RF Will Robertson cashing in 1B Yorman Rodriguez (single, stolen base) that brought the game to 9-9.
With RHP Josh Almonte now in the game to pitch the bottom of the 8th, the Queens, NY standout was fantastic striking out 1B Tyler Plantier before allowing a lazy single to C Bryant Quijada. With Quijada at second after swiping the base, Almonte struck out 2B Bladimir Restituyo but the pitch went in the dirt with C Philip Clarke scooping it up to throw down to first to record the out - the throw however missed the mark and suddenly put runners at second and third with just the one out.
From there Almonte got SS Ezwquiel Tovar to fly out to right field producing the second out.
Canadians manager Casey Candaele then came and got almonte opting for LHP Luke Gillingham to face 3B Aaron Schunk (intentional walk) and DH Mike Toglia. Gillingham got a flyball out of Toglia to left field that should have ended the inning leaving Boise with the bases loaded but LF McGregory Contreras dropped the ball allowing two runs to score which knocked the wind out from the Canadians sails.
Boise closer RHP Stephen Jones came in making quick work of the Canadians to secure his 8th save of the season and give the Hawks the 11-9 victory.
With the loss, Vancouver falls to 3-4 (.429) while Boise improves to 4-3 (.571) which tomorrow's game set for 6:15pm PST out at Memorial Stadium.
Notes: Vancouver is now 0-6 this season when they have an opportunity to move above .500 record wise... The Canadians got multi-hit night's from 2B Trevor Schwecke (3-for-5, 2 2B); 1B Yorman Rodriguez (2-for-5) and RF Will Robertson (2-for-5, RBI)... The Canadians struck out ten Boise hitters.
Vancouver sends LHP Juan Diaz to the mound on Tuesday as the Canadians are 2-2 (.500) for its current 10-game road trip that wrap up on August 4th in Tri-City. The Canadians return home to Nat Bailey Stadium on August 8th to open up a three-game series vs. Everett.
