Crushers swept by Freedom

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, were held to just five hits on Thursday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as they were swept by the Florence Freedom, falling in the series finale, 5-1.

For the Crushers (17-23) the loss brings an end to a forgetful month of June, where they went 8-18. For the Freedom (15-26) the sweep was their first of the season, and they've now won six out of their last seven games overall.

For the third night in a row, Florence fired the first shot. They scored a pair of runs in the top of the third to take an early lead. Josh Henderson and Travis Weaver smacked back-to-back one out base hits, and Henderson scored on Daniel Fraga's RBI single to left. Taylor Oldham then reached on Nick Covello's error at third which brought Weaver home.

Lake Erie was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Parker Norris reached on a two-out single to center, and he scored a couple of pitches later on Brendan Costantino's RBI triple to right field.

Florence added two more in the top of the fourth inning. Andre Godbold reached on an error to start the inning and Richard Seigel followed with a base hit to right. After Mike Devine (5-2) retired the next two batters, Henderson belted a two-run single to center to give Florence a 4-1 advantage.

The Freedom used the long ball to add to their advantage in the top of the sixth inning, as Seigel hit his first homer of the season to give Florence a 5-1 advantage.

Lefty Stetson Nelson (2-3) scored the victory for the Freedom, tossing seven strong innings, allowing just a run on five hits while fanning three. Devine took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned on 10 hits while fanning six batters over 6.2 innings of work.

Costantino paced the Crushers offensively, going 2-for-4 at the top of the order and drove in their only run of the night.

The Crushers will begin a three-game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. Left-hander Todd Kibby (2-4, 3.21) will start for the Crushers and the Otters will go with left-hander Hunter Ackerman (3-2, 3.86). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
