AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, saw their comeback bid fall one run short on Sunday evening, as they were swept for the first time this season, falling to the Schaumburg Boomers, 5-4 at Sprenger Stadium.

The loss for the Crushers (15-12) was their fourth in a row, and was their sixth in their last seven games at home, while the victory for the Boomers (13-13) was their sixth in their last seven games.

After the Crushers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Schaumburg did most of their damage in the top of the third. Walks were issued to the first two batters of the inning, and they advanced on Jack Parenty's sacrifice bunt.

Ty Moore then reached on a fielding error committed by the pitcher, Mason Klotz (2-1) which allowed James Keller to score. After another walk was issued to load the bases, Collin Ferguson reached on a fielding error committed by second baseman Aaron Hill which brought Nick DiBenedetto home. Zack Weigel followed with a RBI single, Kenny Towns brought in the next run on a sac fly RBI and Dylan Jones brought in the final run with a RBI single.

The Crushers scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin LaChance drove in the first run on a double down the line in left. With runners at second and third and two out, Dalton Wheat hit a ground ball to second, but Parenty couldn't handle it, and the two out error proved to be costly. LaChance and Cody Lenehan both scored on the play to bring the Crushers within two (5-3).

Lake Erie capitalized on another error in the bottom of the sixth inning to score their next run, but squandered an opportunity to do more. The bases were loaded with nobody out when Kewby Meyer hit a ground ball to first. The first baseman Collin Ferguson's throw to the plate brought the catcher James Keller off the dish, allowing Cameron Newell to score. However, Schaumburg's Ivan Vieitez would get the Boomers out of the inning with the lead intact. He induced a pop-out, and then an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, there was a 55-minute rain delay. After the delay, the Crushers had one more chance to score. They had runners on first and second with one out, but could not cash in.

Steve Ridings (3-2) scored the victory for Schaumburg, allowing three runs, one earned on six hits while walking four and fanning five over five innings of action. Chris Hall (1) snagged the save after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Klotz took the loss after allowing five runs, one earned on four hits over 2.2 innings of work. The Crusher bullpen used the combination of Luis Cohen, Max Biedrzycki, Branden Nunn and Justin Sinibaldi to toss 6.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Three Crushers hit safely multiple times in the contest. Hill led the way going 3-for-3 with a trio of singles and walked twice, reaching in all five plate appearances. LaChance went 2-for-3 and reached four times on the day, while Mason Brown went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The Crushers are off on Monday, but will begin a three game series on the road against the Normal (IL) Cornbelters on Tuesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
