Lake Erie Crushers News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Lake Erie Crushers dropped both ends of Saturday evening's double header against the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park, falling 5-1 in game one, before losing in extra innings with a 3-2 setback in game two.
The losses for the Crushers (8-4) ultimately resulted in their first series loss of the season, while the wins for Traverse City (5-8) snapped a brief two-game slide.
Game One Traverse City took advantage of three Lake Erie errors in game one, which allowed them to take an early lead and they never looked back. Ryan Bottger led off with a walk before making his way to second on a single from Will Kengor. Jose Vargas then reached on a fielder's choice, and Kengor was erased at second on the play. Brandon Thomasson then lined out to Juan Avila at third, but Avila's throw to first in an attempt to double up Vargas on the play, ended up in foul territory, and the errant throw allowed Bottger to score.
The Beach Bums added four more in the bottom of the third. Jeff DeBlieux started the inning with a double, and Bottger followed with a RBI double down the line in left. Bottger scored moments later on Kengor's RBI single to right to make it a 3-0 lead. With runners on first and third and one out, a wild pitch allowed Kengor to score, and after Jose Barraza's throw to the plate got away from Todd Kibby (1-1) the ball ended up in foul territory, allowing Thomasson to score all the way from first base.
The Crushers scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning. The inning started on Brendan Costantino's double down the line in right, and he scored later in the inning on Max Casper's RBI single to right field.
Kibby took the loss in game one, after allowing five runs, four earned on five hits over six innings of action and struck out five along the way. Dylan Stoops (2-0) scored the victory, going all seven innings, and allowed just a run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Connor Oliver led the way for the Lake Erie offense with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3.
Game Two The second game of the day featured good pitching on both sides, but the Crushers fell in extra innings, losing in the bottom of the ninth.
The Beach Bums scored first, on a solo homer from Tyler Peterson in the bottom of the second inning. They were able to add to that two innings later, as Kengor delivered his third of four hits in the contest, with a two-out RBI single to give them a 2-0 lead.
Lake Erie plated both of their runs in the top of the sixth. Carlos Avila reached on a one out walk, and made his way to second on a single from Jose Barraza. Two batters later, Juan Avila delivered his second of three hits in the contest, a double to the gap in left-center. Carlos Avila scored easily on the play, and Barraza was able to beat the relay throw from Kengor at short to score the game tying run.
Both teams squandered chances to score in extra innings, until the Beach Bums cashed in in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on second and nobody out, Jose Vargas belted a single to center to score Kengor to win the game.
Traverse City's Andrew Brockett (1-0) scored the victory after tossing a scoreless ninth, while Fernando Gallegos (2-1) who was pitching on three days rest, took the loss after allowing the unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Juan Avila led the charge for the Crushers in game two, going 3-for-4, while Barraza turned in a two-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Sunday evening. Right-hander Colin Feldtman (0-1, 7.00) will start for the Crushers and the Beach Bums will go with right-hander Kyle McKay (0-0, 18.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
