Lake Erie Crushers News Release
JOLIET, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, trailed late in the series opener against Joliet on Tuesday night. Using five hits and three runs in the ninth, the Crushers pulled off an epic 5-4 comeback win.
Joliet took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off of a two-run home run by Travis Bolin. That was the only big mistake, Crushers starter Alex Romero made in his outing.
Joliet (9-12) took a 3-0 lead in the six inning after an unearned run scored on a Lake Erie error. Romero earned a no-decision after throwing seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned). He struck out eight.
The Crushers got back into the game in the seventh against Joliet starter ,Shane Bryant. With two outs, Cody Lenahan and Dalton Wheat hit back-to-back doubles, plating a run. Bryan DeLaRosa singled home Wheat and the Crushers were within a run.
In the eighth inning, another Lake Erie error helped lead to a run but Louis Cohen (1-0) struck out the side. Joliet led 4-2, entering the ninth.
The Slammers brought in Keegan Long to try and close it out but he allowed a leadoff double to Sean Hurley and an infield single to Kewby Meyer. After Lenahan grounded out, both Hurley and Meyer moved into scoring position.
Wheat followed with an RBI single but he was thrown out trying to advance to second. With the Crushers down to their last out, DeLaRosa singled off of Long and Meyer scored the tying run.
Cameron Newell was next and he lined a double into left-center. DeLaRosa raced all the way around and scored the go-ahead run just ahead of the throw.
In the bottom of the ninth, Justin Sinabaldi got the first two outs before getting into trouble and loading the bases. Manager Cam Roth went to his bullpen and brought in Branden Nunn. The right-hander got London Lindley to pop up, securing the 5-4 win.
Game two of the series will be tomorrow at 7:05. Sean Renzi (2-1) goes for Lake Erie (14-8). Joliet will send Liam O'Sullivan (1-2) to the mound.
