Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners proudly announce that the 2019 and 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championships will be played at Rent One Park in Marion, with the first of those eight-team tournaments to be held from May 21st through 26th, 2019.
Having been played at a neutral site since 2001, the OVC held the tournament at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama for the last two years after seven seasons (2010-16) at the Ballpark in Jackson in Jackson, Tennessee, and nine years (2001-09) at Brooks Stadium in Paducah, where the Miners play an annual spring training contest. The 2018 season marked the 40th year of the OVC Baseball Championship, with the first elimination-style tournament being held in 1980.
"The Miners organization is extremely proud and excited to be hosting the OVC Baseball Championship over the next two years," Miners COO MIKE PINTO said. "Not only does this provide us with the opportunity to showcase our incredible stadium, but it also will bring significant revenues into the area, drawing people to hotels, restaurants and shops. Between the Colt World Series the next two years and potentially beyond, and the OVC tournament to go with our Miners schedule, Rent One Park will be the place to be for our fans to see great baseball."
The Ohio Valley Conference currently has 11 baseball-playing institutions, including Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Eastern Illinois University, Eastern Kentucky University, Jacksonville State University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.
The Miners return to action on the road Wednesday night at 5:35 p.m. at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky against the Florence Freedom, with ROBBY ROWLAND pitching against former Miners right-hander Steve Hagen.
