Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, lost their fourth straight game at home on Friday night at Sprenger Stadium, dropping a 10-0 decision to the River City Rascals.
The loss for the Crushers (18-13) snapped a three game winning streak, while the victory for the Rascals (18-12) was their third in their last four games.
River City jumped on the board in the top of the first. Mike Jurgella reached on a one out walk, and came home three pitches later on Clint Freeman's RBI double to center field.
The Rascals added to their lead in the top of the fifth. Gerrion Grim reached on a one out double off the wall in center field, and came around score on JD Hearn's two out RBI base hit to center.
The Rascals struck for two more with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Braxton Martinez reached on a walk, made his way to third on a two out double from Kevin Suarez. A passed ball would bring Suarez home, and Grim stroked a single to center to score Suarez to cap the inning.
Lake Erie wasted an opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kevin LaChance, Aaron Hill and Kewby Meyer began the inning with three straight hits to load the bases, but the Crushers could not capitalize on the opportunity.
Paul Kronenfeld's RBI single brought Hearn home in the seventh, and Suarez reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Jurgella to score to make it 6-0 Rascals. In the eighth, Hearn belted another RBI single to score Grim.
The Rascals added three more in the ninth. Martinez and Kronenfeld hit back-to-back homeruns to start the inning, and Connor Oliver drove in the final run of the game with a RBI single.
Hector Hernandez (5-0) tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits while fanning 10 to pick up the victory for the Rascals. Donny Murray (2-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings of work.
Only three Crushers recorded hits on the night, and LaChance led the way going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the River City Rascals at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Ethan Westphal (0-2, 1.93) gets the start for the Crushers and the Rascals will counter with righty Josh Kimborowicz (1-0, 2.52). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
