Syracuse Crunch News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA -- The Syracuse Crunch suffered their first regulation road loss of the season, falling to the Penguins 5-3 tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The loss snaps a nine game road win streak and brings the club's overall record to 12-4-1-1 overall and road record to 9-1-0-1.

The Penguins put the pressure on the Crunch early taking a 1-0 lead 3:09 into the opening frame. Forward Trevor Smith flipped the puck over Crunch netminder Dustin Tokarski, assisted by defenseman Dylan Reese.

The Crunch tied the game with 1:02 remaining in the first period. Right wing Richard Panik tapped a cross-crease pass from Radko Gudas past Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff, extending his AHL-best point streak to 11 games.

The Penguins regained their lead with when Beau Bennett placed a wrist-shot between Tokarski and the near post at the 8:49 mark of the second period.

Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin extended the lead to 3-1 when his shot from the point found the back of Tokarski's net at 17:53. With Crunch defenseman Jared Nightingale and Penguins center Warren Peters serving simultaneous roughing penalties, the Crunch went down a man when Panik was also whistled for tripping. The Crunch penalty kill unit killed the Penguins four-on-three man-advantage but gave up the power-play tally just as Nightingale and Warren were released.

Riley Holzapfel extended the Penguins lead 4-1 with a breakaway, power-play goal at the 9:24 mark of the third period. The goal was Holzapfel's third point of the night (1g, 2a).

The Crunch cut the score to 4-2 with Dmitry Korobov's third goal of the season. Korobov's goal came at the 10:45 mark of the third period, assisted by Brett Connolly and Mark Barberio.

Philip-Michael Devos made it a one-goal game with a power-play tally at the 17:23 mark of the third period but the Crunch wouldn't come any closer. Penguins center Smith scored an empty netter to secure a 5-3 Penguins win.
