Amerks Drop First Game in Home-And-Home Series with Toronto
November 30, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... A quick start and a pair of goals by Matt Frattin helped the Toronto Marlies to a 4-1 win over the Rochester Americans Friday at The Blue Cross Arena. The contest was the first of a two-game set between the North Division rivals, which resumes Saturday night in Toronto.
David Leggio made his fourth consecutive start for the Amerks, turning aside 27 of the Marlies' 31 shots. Maxime Legault tallied his first goal of the season, while Brian Flynn's nine-game point streak came to an end after the rookie forward compiled 15 points (7+8) from Nov. 4 to Nov. 28.
Carter Ashton and Jerry D'Amigo also scored for the Marlies in front of a 28-save effort from goaltender Ben Scrivens, who earned second star honors en route to picking up his sixth win of the season.
The Marlies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two goals in 15 seconds, beginning with Ashton's fifth goal of the season. Keith Aucoin, Toronto's top point-getter, entered the zone on an odd-man rush and sent a cross-ice pass to Ashton for the finish at 16:02 of the first period.
The Marlies struck again when Frattin roofed a quick one-timer on a pass from Nicolas Deschamps to put Toronto up by a pair heading into the first intermission.
Toronto built on its lead at 3:41 of the second stanza, when Frattin scored his second goal of the night. Will Acton retrieved the loose puck behind the net and sent a pass to the slot to Frattin, who beat Leggio high glove side to give the Marlies a three-goal advantage.
The Amerks got on the board at 3:46 of the third period as Legault redirected Alex Biega's point shot for his first of the season. Nick Tarnasky also earned an assist on the play to make it a 3-1 game.
D'Amigo sealed the 4-1 victory for the Marlies, adding an empty-netter with 53 seconds remaining in the game.
The same two teams meet again on Saturday, Dec. 1 as the home-and-home series shifts back across the border to Ricoh Coliseum in downtown Toronto. The 7:00 p.m. contest (originally scheduled for 5:00 p.m.) can be heard live on Sports 1280 WHTK & will be televised live nationally across Canada on Sportsnet ONE.
