Syracuse Crunch News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA. - Matt Murray and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins blanked the Syracuse Crunch, 4-0, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis turned aside 25-of-29 shots faced. His Penguins counterpart, Murray, earned his second win and first shutout of the post-season, stopping all 27 shots. Syracuse was unable to convert on four power-play opportunities, while stopping only four-of-seven Wilkes-Barre/Scranton man-advantages.
The Penguins opened the contest with a highly effective power play, striking three times in the first period. Early into the frame, Carter Ashton put the Crunch down a man due to a slashing minor. The Penguins exploited this at the 2:32 mark. Conor Sheary fired a shot from the left point that was redirected wide by Andrew Ebbett. Ebbett chased down the loose puck to the end boards and punched it into the crease for Jayson Megna to open scoring.
Again while on the man-advantage, the Penguins built a two-goal lead with 3:28 remaining in the period. With Gudlevskis set on the left post awaiting a shot from the wing, Josh Archibald sauced one to the slot for Carter Rowney to chip in. Scott Harrington earned a point for the secondary assist.
When it appeared the period was over, Tom Kostopoulos snuck in another power-play tally with one second remaining for the Penguins to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
After an even second period, the Penguins scored at the 16:10 mark of the final twenty to take a 4-0 victory over the Crunch. Joey Mormina attempted to poke check the puck away from Kasperi Kapanen, but it bounced towards the goal and over Gudlevskis' pad to light the lamp. Danny Syvret recorded the assist.
The Crunch will look to overcome a two-game deficit when the teams travel to Syracuse for Game 3 on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
