
Pirates Drop Game Two 6-2

Manchester, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs (2-0) scored two goals just 30 seconds into the game, beating the Portland Pirates (0-2) by a score of 6-2 on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Game Two of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal.
Michael Mersch drew first blood for the Monarchs, netting a goal just 20 seconds into the first period, assisted by Brian O'Neill and Nick Shore. Just ten seconds later at 0:30, Jordan Weal made it 2-0 Monarchs with a goal assisted by Sean Backman and Jeff Schultz. The Pirates didn't answer until the first period was nearly through when Brendan Shinnimin scored at 19:45, assisted by Christian Dvorak and Joel Hanley.
Manchester increased their lead in the third period with a succession of three goals in just 39 seconds. Backman scored on a power play shot at 1:53, assisted by Vincent LoVerde and Nic Dowd. This was quickly followed by a goal from O'Neill at 2:10, assisted by Derek Forbort and Shore. At 2:32 Dowd scored, assisted by Forbort and Colin Miller. Philip Samuelsson attempted to cut into the Monarchs lead at 6:30 with a power play goal assisted by Shinnimin and Henrik Samuelsson. Mersch bookended his game-opening goal with the last goal of the evening, an empty-netter assisted by Dowd and Shore.
Mike McKenna (0-1) started the night in goal but was removed from the game after allowing those first two goals in the opening seconds of the game. McKenna saved one of three shots faced before being replaced by Louis Domingue (0-1). Domingue saved 23 of 26 shots that he faced. Jean-Francois Berube (2-0) got the start for Manchester, saving 17 of 19 shots faced.
The Pirates and Monarchs will face each other again tomorrow evening in Game Three of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal on Sunday at the Cross Insurance Arena at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are BOGO-Half-Off when you call the Pirates box office at 207-PIRATES before 3 p.m. tomorrow. If necessary, Game Four will be played at the Cross Insurance Arena on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m., and Game Five would by played at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m.
