August 20, 2004 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Altoona, PA - Dave Crouthers, Andy Mitchell, and Jacobo Sequea combined to hurl a no-hitter and strike out seven batters to power the Bowie Baysox past the Altoona Curve, 2-0, in Eastern League action Thursday.
Crouthers (8-8) tossed the first seven innings of no-hit ball, issuing four walks, and striking out six batters. Mitchell walked one and struck out one in a hitless eighth inning and Sequea hurled a perfect ninth inning for his 23rd save, to place him one save away from the Baysox record of 24, set by Gabe Molina in 1998.
Bobby Bradley (4-3) pitched well in the loss as he gave up just one earned run on four hits in five innings of work. Bradley walked two and fanned three in the outing.
Gary Cates scored on a sacrifice hit from Keith Reed in the bottom of the first inning to give the Baysox (63-62) all the offense they needed. Cates later knocked in Branden Florence, who is making his first appearance with Bowie after being called up from Single-A Frederick. Cates finished 1-for-3. Keith Reed went 2-for-4 and knocked in one run, Ed Rogers and Brandon Fahey each chipped in two hits.
Altoona will try to muster up some offense against Bowie's pitching on Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. RHP Hayden Penn will make his Baysox debut against RHP Matt Peterson.
