The Reading Fightin Phils topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels on a beautiful Friday night. While the lead changed hands a few times, Reading recorded nine hits throughout the contest and made no errors. A perfect throw from Grenny Cumana to Rodolfo Duran at the plate ended the ballgame as Richmond tried to rally back in the bottom of the ninth. Hans Crouse was electric in his organizational introduction after being a key piece in the Spencer Howard trade with the Texas Rangers at the deadline.
A pitcher's duel until the six, Reading scored their first run as an error off of Cumana's batted ball allowed Bryson Stott to cross the plate.
In the bottom half, Richmond tied it up scoring on a wild pitch.
Reading countered in the sixth as Matt Kroon's RBI single plated Chris Cornelius.
Cornelius had a three-hit day in his Double-A Debut on the road.
The Fightins tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Duran sent home Madison Stokes to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Richmond threatened. A single from Mitchell Tolman to right allowed Andres Angulo to score easily. Simon Whiteman pushed his luck coming home and a heater from Cumana in right to Duran behind the plate was the perfect throw. Duran's tag at the dish was in time to end the game 3-2.
Cornelius had a three-hit day in his call up to Double-A on the road.
Crouse threw five shutout innings against Richmond allowing just two hits and walking three. The righty struck out five. Nick Lackney (W, 3-0) came in for relief allowing one run on one hit and a wild pitch. Kyle Dohy struck out the side in the seventh, stranding two on the base paths. He allowed a base hit in the eighth but again left a Flying Squirrel on first. Billy Sullivan got two outs in the ninth and Zach Warren (S, 1) came for injury relief.
