Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
C.J. Cron tied a Pioneer League record with three home runs in an 8-3 Owlz win over the Ogden Raptors. Cron hit solo home runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, and a 2-run home run in the 5th.
Nick Maronde picked up his first professional victory, hurling five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
The Owlz (2-1) scored 23 runs in a two-game sweep of the Raptors (0-3).
Cron got the scoring started in the 2nd inning with his 9th home run of the year. He gave the Owlz a 2-0 lead in the 3rd on his 10th home run of the year. Two more runs came home in the top of the 4th on RBI groundouts by Trevor Hairgrove and Drew Martinez.
Ryan Jones led off the 5th inning with a bunt single to the pitcher. Cron hit his 3rd home run of the night on 1-0 curveball off of Derek Cone. Cone went 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits, including three home runs to Cron.
While Cron had himself a very impressive evening, so did Maronde. The former Florida Gator allowed only one hit, while picking up his first professional win. Junior Carlin gave up one run, while Shane Riedie gave up two, one of which was earned.
The Owlz will now head home for a six-game homestand. First pitch between the Owlz and Idaho Falls Chukars is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night at the Home of the Owlz.
