Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS Mont.--In another strong performance, Blair Walters (6-0) leads the Voyagers past the Brewers, 5-2.
Picking up his Pioneer League leading sixth win of the season, Walters went seven innings, giving up two runs--only one of which was earned. The lefty struck out eight and walked two in an outing in which he allowed just five hits.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of third to fall behind 2-0, the Voyagers answered immediately in the top of the fourth against Tommy Toledo (0-1). After facing the minimum through the first three innings, Toledo gave up a single to Qualon Millender to begin the fourth, walked David Herbek and then allowed each to advance on a wild pitch. With runners at second and third, team RBI leader Joe De Pinto scored Millender on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
After De Pinto got the Voyagers on the board, Mark Haddow doubled home the tying run. The extra base hit knocked Toledo out and brought Chad Pierce to the hill. A Pierce wild pitch allowed Haddow to third, which set up Martin Medina's sacrifice fly to give the Voyagers a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, Millender collected the final of his three hits, an RBI triple which scored Randall Thorpe, extending the lead to 4-2.
Then, in the eighth inning, the double-play combination of Herbek and De Pinto collected back-to-back doubles, extending the lead to 5-2. De Pinto, who collected the latter of the two hits, brought home his second run of the game and his team-leading 33rd of the season.
The Voyagers got a strong performance out of the bullpen, getting two perfect innings from Cody Winiarski and Joe Dvorsky.
Winiarski has yet to allow a run in 9.2 innings this season, and Dvorsky collected his third save on the season, striking out two in the ninth.
Millender's on-base streak was extended to 17 games in a contest in which the Voyagers moved to 3-1 in the second half, sitting atop the North division.
The series continues tomorrow night. Peter Gehle (LHP) goes for the Voyagers against Mike Strong (LHP). First pitch between the Voyagers and the Brewers is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Kindrick Legion Field with the pregame show set to begin at 6:35 p.m. on 560 KMON.
