COLUMBUS, Ohio (Thursday, March 11) - The Columbus Crew finished up its 10-day Spring-training trip to Spain this morning with a 4-0 win over Barcelona's "B" team. The game was played in Barcelona, approximately 380 miles from this morning's terrorist attacks in Madrid. The team's training camp was based in Lloret de Mar, which is approximately 420 miles from Madrid.

The team departs Barcelona Friday morning, March 12, at 11 a.m. local time to return to the United States. The team stops in Madrid for 45 minutes but does not switch planes, before heading to New York City, and then arriving in Columbus at 7:25 p.m. tomorrow night. Spain is six hours ahead of Columbus. The Crew left for Spain on March 1.

"With our team currently in Spain, today's tragedy in Madrid hits a little closer to home," Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith said. "The team was thankfully many miles away in Barcelona, but The Columbus Crew organization offers its deepest sympathies to the families affected and to the Spanish people, in general, who have been so hospitable to us."

Columbus downed Barcelona's "B" team today, which plays in Spain's second division, behind two goals from Jeff Cunningham, a goal and an assist from Simon Elliott, and a pair of assists from Edson Buddle. Simon Elliott got The Crew on the board first with a long-range blast in the 29th minute. Cunningham then tallied in the 36th and 44th minutes to put Columbus up 3-0 at the half, and Frankie Hejduk closed out the scoring in the 71st minute. The team finished its trip with a 1-0-2 record.

After Spain, training will resume in Columbus from March 13-19 and then The Crew will go to Charleston, S.C., from March 20-28 for the Carolina Challenge Cup. The team will then return to Columbus for Crew Week IX, March 28-April 2, heading into the season opener on Saturday, April 3.
