Crew Advances to Quarterfinals
July 18, 2002 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - By virtue of its 3-0 victory over the A-League's Richmond Kickers on Wednesday (July 17), The Crew has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup for the fifth time in as many tries, where it will face the NY/NJ MetroStars on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
The all-MLS quarterfinal will be played at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y., and it will be the second game of a doubleheader, featuring a match between the WUSA's New York Power and Carolina Courage in the opener. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. and the Crew-Metros match will start at about 9:15 p.m.
The Crew's bid to advance to the Open Cup semifinals for the third time - but first since 1999 - will be carried live by Flagship radio station 103.9, The New Eagle.
The Crew and MetroStars also met in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals at Crew Stadium in 2000 and that one was a classic. The teams finished regulation tied at 1-1, thanks to a 62nd-minute goal from the MetroStars' Tab Ramos and a 74th-minute equalizer from his then-U.S. National Team teammate Brian McBride. Following 30 scoreless minutes of overtime, the game went to a penalty kick shootout, in which the MetroStars ultimately outlasted Columbus, 7-6.
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in American soccer and is among the oldest of its kind in the world. Open to affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is an 89-year-old, single-elimination tournament based upon similar competitions played across the world concurrent with domestic league action.
The Crew advanced to the finals of the 1998 tournament, reached the semifinals in 1999 and was knocked out in the quarterfinals in both 2000 and 2001. The 1999 championship match was played at Crew Stadium.
Fox Sports World and Fox Sports World Español, which have broadcast a number of U.S. Open Cup matches across the last two years including the semifinals and championship games, will once again be the official television broadcaster of the tournament in 2002. The exact broadcast schedule for this year's tournament will be announced at a later date.
