Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER -- J.P. Crawford hit his first homer in a Threshers uniform in Clearwater's 8-4 loss to Brevard County on Friday at Bright House Field.
After the Manatees (6-3) jumped on Clearwater starter Jeb Stefan for three runs in the top of the first, the Threshers (4-5) answered back with three of their own in the home half of the inning.
Roman Quinn doubled to start the frame, and Crawford followed that up with a two-run homerun to right field off of Brevard County starter Hobbs Johnson. After KC Serna struck out, Brandon Short then belted his second big fly of the season to left-center to tie it up.
Brevard County responded with another run off of Stefan to take a 4-3 lead in the second, after an RBI single by Orlando Arcia.
Stefan (4-7) lasted five innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits while striking out one. It was the right-hander's shortest start since June 3 against Bradenton.
The top of the Manatees' order did most of the damage on Friday. Nathan Orf, Arcia, and Tyrone Taylor combined to go 8-for-15 with three homers, six RBI's, and seven runs scored.
The Threshers would pull to within two runs after an RBI groundout by Serna in the bottom of the fifth made the score 6-4. That would be all Clearwater would get against the Manatees southpaw starter.
Johnson (9-6) earned the win, tossing five innings and surrendering four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.
Game two of the three game series is Saturday and first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Mark Leiter, Jr. is slated to make his 2014 Threshers debut against Austin Ross for Brevard County. Coverage on threshersbaseball.com begins at 6:15 p.m.
