Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (5-4) celebrated their sixth walk-off win of the season in a 2-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays (3-6) on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees collected six of their eight hits in the final three innings, scoring two unearned runs in the comeback.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Greg Bird delivered the game-winning hit as he pulled a ground ball just past the diving Christian Lopes at second base. Trent Garrison scored from second, beating out a throw from right field by Marcus Knecht.
LHP Miguel Sulbaran got a no-decision after pitching his third straight quality start. The 20-year-old yielded one run on three hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out seven.
Dunedin broke a scoreless tie in the fifth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Dwight Smith Jr. knocked a 3-2 pitch up the middle for an RBI single.
The Yankees were held to three hits while facing Blue Jays' starter Ben White. The righty allowed one unearned run in six and a third innings, walking three and striking out six.
White left the game after allowing a one-out single by Aaron Judge in the seventh. Reliever Wil Browning faced Angelo Gumbs, who grounded a ball to shortstop. Emilio Guererro attempted to turn two, but Lopes missed his throw at second and the ball landed in shallow right-center. The error placed runners at second and third and Browning intentionally walked Garrison. Jose Rosario tied the game, singling to left-center field.
Nick Rumbelow (5-0) relieved Sulbaran in the eighth. The right-hander retired six of the seven batters he faced, allowing one hit and striking out three in two scoreless frames.
The 1-1 tie moved into the bottom of the ninth. Garrison reached second base on an infield single as third baseman Gustavo Pierre threw the ball into the Tampa dugout. LHP Efrain Nieves (2-3) then stuck out the next two hitters before dealing a 3-0 count to Cito Culver. Nieves intentionally walked Culver, setting the scene for Bird.
