Moncton, NB â Veteran goaltender Corey Crawford blocked all 23 shots he faced to lead the Moncton Wildcats to a 1 â 0 victory over the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles before 3,681 at the Moncton Coliseum on Sunday.
Crawford, who was drafted in the second round (52nd overall) by the Chicago Black Hawks in 2003, improved his lifetime shut out total in the League to six, as he recorded the third shut out of the young season in the QMJHL. He improved his season record to 4 â 1 â 1, while the Screaming Eagles' Martin Houle blocked 41 of 42 shots, to be named the game' s first star, as his record dropped to 1 â 3 - 1.
Stephane Goulet (3rd) notched the only goal of the game, on the powerplay, with 12 seconds remaining in the first period. Goulet re-directed a blistering slap shot from defenseman Oskars Bartulis, on a set up from Adam Pineault. Moncton outshot Cape Breton 42 â 23, including 21 â 10 in the first and 15 â 6 in the second, while the Screaming Eagles held a 7 â 6 advantage in the third. Cape Breton was 0 for 4 on the powerplay, while Moncton went 1 for 5. The game's three stars were #1 â Martin Houle, #2 â Oskars Bartulis and #3 â Steve Bernier. Houle blocked a penalty shot by Moncton's Ryan Salvis at 8:07 of the first period, after Salvis was tripped, on a breakaway, by defenseman Adam Pardy.
Moncton remains in second place in the Atlantic Division and in a tie for third overall with the Gatineau Olympiques, with a record of 5 â 1 â 1 (11 pts), while Cape Breton remains in fourth place in the Atlantic Division and a tie for 14th overall with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies with a record of 1 â 6 â 2 (4 pts.).
Moncton continues its five game home stand on Tuesday, when they host the Victoriaville Tigers at the Moncton Coliseum at 7 p.m.
