GREENSBORO, N.C. - This time, the patented ninth-inning rally fell a run short for the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
The Hickory Crawdads held on to beat the Hoppers 4-3 Sunday evening at First Horizon Park.
The Hoppers, who have won several games in their final at-bat at home this season, trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Juan Figueroa drew a leadoff walk from Hickory starter Luis Munoz, who gave way to reliever Matt Swanson.
Andy Jenkins followed with a single up the middle. Kris Harvey grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Jenkins at second, with Figueroa going to third. Swanson then faked a throw to third and threw to first to pick off Harvey for the second out.
Colin Roberson singled in Figueroa, but Matt Kutler grounded out to end the game.
Munoz (6-2) got the win, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out six. Swanson earned his ninth save.
Hickory scored first against Hoppers starter Sean West on an RBI single by Chris Jones in the second inning. Andrew McCutchen scored the second run on a groundout by Mike McCuistion in the third.
The Hoppers tied it in the fourth with Jenkins and Kutler driving in runs.
McCutchen singled in the fifth and McCuistion belted his fifth homer of the season for a 4-2 Crawdads lead.
West (3-4) suffered his fourth straight loss. Travis Talbott and David Humen combined for three shutout innings of relief, with five strikeouts.
The Hoppers finished the home stand 3-3 and are 9-9 in the second half of the South Atlantic League season.
After a day off Monday, Greensboro heads out on the road for four games at Lake County in Eastlake, Ohio. The Hoppers return to First Horizon on July 15 to start an eight-game home stand, four against Lakewood followed by four against Delmarva.
