
Denker double drops Rome in Columbus, 4-3

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (10-8) won 5-4 over the Rome Braves (7-11) Sunday at Golden Park, taking the fourth straight game against Rome and a 2-0 lead in the series. 2B Travis Denker delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and the Catfish held on.
Rome took a 3-0 lead with one run in the first inning and two more in the fifth. Columbus got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. LF Adam Godwin hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored C Tony Harper.
The Catfish tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the sixth inning. Two-out bases loaded walks to 3B Shane Justis and CF Bridger Hunt drove in the two runs.
SS Ivan DeJesus singled to lead off the seventh inning. With one out Denker drove a ball to center field and over the head of CF Quentin Davis. DeJesus raced around to score what turned out to be the game-winning run as Denker pulled in to second base with a double.
Starter RHP Mario Alvarez gave up three runs, two earned, in the first five innings. He was followed by RHP Matt Gomez de Segura (3-3) who shut out Rome for 2 2/3 innings and got the win. RHP Ramon Troncoso did not allow a run in the last 1 1/3 innings to earn his ninth save.
DeJesus, Godwin, Harper and 1B David Sutherland each had two hits for the Catfish.
The Catfish will go for a sweep of the three-game series Monday at 7:00pm. LHP David Pfeiffer (1-2, 4.71) will take on LHP Jake Stevens (1-1, 4.94).
