Cranmer Grand Slam Guides Marlins to First Win

June 5, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Gastonia, N.C - The Morehead City Marlins picked up their first win of the 2013 season with a 6-2 victory over the Gastonia Grizzlies on Tuesday night in Gastonia.

The Marlins scored all of the runs they would need in the top half of the first when Chase McDonald drew a walk to load the bases for Ryan Cranmer with just one out in the inning. Cranmer proved the old theory of, walks kill, when he crushed a grand slam over the wall in left-centerfield. The Cranmer grand slam gave Morehead City starting pitcher, Justin Taylor a 4-0 lead before he even had to throw a pitch.

Morehead City tacked on two more insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning. Gastonia fought back in the bottom half of the sixth scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single.

Taylor picked up the win for the Marlins, tossing five innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out two and walking two. The bullpen duo of Robert Whaley and Jonathan Bobea took care of the Grizzlies by tossing four shutout innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out three and walking none. Michael Martin suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. The southpaw allowed five runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings on the bump. With the win, Taylor improved to 1-1, while Martin fell to 1-1 on the season.

The Marlins travel to Florence, SC to take on the Red Wolves in the finale of a two-day road trip. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 Wednesday night.
