Late Inning Heroics for Brian Celsi

June 5, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

Round two between the Wilmington Sharks and Fayetteville SwampDogs was better than expected as it lasted three hours and 58 minutes and went 14 innings.

With a 1-1 game heading into the bottom of the 14, Daniel Nevares (Binghamton) struck out to lead the inning and his college teammate, Bill Bereszniewicz, drove a one-out single through the left side of the infield in his first at-bat of the summer season.

Catcher Tyler Moore forced a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Shortstop Chase Rader had one of the most important plays despite not getting a hit, because he beat out the potential inning-ending double play to the middle infield.

With an 0-2 count to the team leader in hits, doubles and RBIs, Brian Celsi smacked a walk-off single through the right side of the infield to win the game for the SwampDogs 2-1 in the bottom of the 14th.

Celsi finished the evening 1-for-7, but that one hit mattered most and Bereszniewicz scored the winning run.

Randy Hair picked up the win after throwing four innings of no-hit baseball and four strikeouts on the evening. The win came down to outstanding bullpen performance for Fayetteville. Cody Dix, Jack Van Horn, Parker McDaniel and Hair combined for nine innings on the mound with just two hits and eight strikeouts.

Shawn Talkington made it through five innings in his second Coastal Plain League start and he now has 12 strikeouts in 12 innings.

The Sharks held their own on the mound with the SwampDogs but they will fall to 3-4 on the year and Fayetteville improves to 6-1 to remain in first place. They travel to Morehead City Thursday night to take on the Marlins at 7:05 p.m.
