Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons (8-3-0-1) defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (8-3-0-2) by the final score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center. Ryan Craig's goal with 2:43 remaining in the third period served as the game-winner as Springfield improved to 5-2-0-0 at home.
The Falcons - who came into the game with only four power-play goals on the season - converted on two of eight opportunities with the man advantage against the Penguins. Tim Erixon scored the team's first power-play goal with a slap shot from the point at the 16:56 mark of the first period. Spencer Machacek notched the second one - his first goal of the season - just three minutes later to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Frederic St. Denis also found the back of the net for Springfield, firing a slap shot past Penguins netminder Jeff Deslauriers at 9:26 of the second period.
Wilkes-Barre Scranton got two goals from Simon Despres and one from Brian Dumoulin.
Goaltender Jeremy Smith made 19 saves on 22 shots between the posts for the Falcons, improving to 5-1-1 this season. Deslauriers stopped 15 of 19 shots in net for the Penguins, falling to 7-2-2 in 2013-14.
