Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 6, 2015) - In the final regular season game of the 2015 season, the Fort Myers Miracle fell 5-1 to the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Hammond Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Miracle scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first against Charlotte starter Buddy Borden. With one out, Ryan Walker doubled down the left field line. Mitch Garver's fly out to right field advanced Walker to third. After battling to a full count, Logan Wade poked a single through the left side to drive in Walker and put the Miracle up 1-0.
Luke Westphal made the start for the Miracle and navigated four scoreless innings until running into difficulty in the fifth. Issuing a lead-off walk to Justin Williams, Wesphal (5-6) struck out Yoel Araujo. Pat Blair followed with a single through the right side. With runners on first and second, a Westphal pitch glanced off the glove of Garver for a passed ball with Kean Wong at the dish. Westphal fanned Wong, but Mike Marjama launched a 1-0 pitch off the base of the wall in dead center field to score a pair of runs and push the Stone Crabs in front, 2-1.
Exiting the game after 4.2 innings, Westphal allowed two runs, one earned, on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Brian Gilbert recorded the final out of the fifth, but gave up a two-out RBI single to Williams in the sixth.
Charlotte tacked on two more runs in the eighth off Miracle reliever Zack Jones. Marjama reached on an error from Engelb Vielma at short to start the inning. Jones retired Casey Gillaspie on a pop out then Hector Guevara on a ground out to second base. With two outs, Maxx Tissenbaum laced a double into right center to knock in Marjama. Granden Goetzman followed with a line drive single that glanced off Tanner Vavra's mitt at third to score Tissenbaum and give the Crabs a 5-1 lead.
Using five pitchers, the Charlotte bullpen held the Miracle off the board over seven innings. Isaac Gil recorded the win with three scoreless frames.
Despite the loss, the Miracle (76-63, 38-31) finished the 2015 season with the best overall record in the Florida State League South Division, but will not be going to the playoffs. Fort Myers closed out the season with a 43-25 record at Hammond Stadium in front of record-setting crowds.
The Miracle set an all-time attendance record with a total of 133,817 fans visiting the CenturyLink Sports Complex this season, marking the first time the club has eclipsed the 130,00 mark in team history. In addition, the Miracle set a new average attendance mark with 2,028 fans over 66 openings. Back on April 10, the Miracle set a new all-time single game attendance record with 9,209 fans.
